Springs Near Tallahassee

Tallahassee has the single most spectacular spring in the state effectively on its doorstep, and then a completely different set of springs stretching west into the Panhandle — a region most Florida springs coverage ignores entirely.

Wakulla, twenty minutes south. Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park is one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs on earth, ringed by old-growth forest, with a glass-bottom and riverboat tour that reliably turns up alligators, turtles, and wading birds. Understand before you go that it is fundamentally a swimming and guided-tour spring rather than a launch-your-own-kayak one — access rules here are stricter than at most parks.

East, along the Withlacoochee. Madison Blue Spring State Park is about an hour east and is a genuine standout: a small, brilliantly clear basin on the river, superb for swimming and snorkelling, and a serious cave-diving site for those with the certification for it.

West, into the Panhandle. Jackson Blue Spring near Marianna is roughly an hour west, with excellent swimming in summer and a well-known cave system. Push further and you reach Morrison Springs, Vortex, and Cypress Springs in Walton and Washington counties — a cluster with a strong dive culture and, in Morrison’s case, one of the most photographed spring basins in Florida.

What is different up here. Panhandle springs run colder in feel because the air is cooler for more of the year, crowds are lighter than in Central Florida, and several of the best are county-run rather than state parks, which means facilities and published fees can be patchier. Confirm before you drive.

Distances are straight-line miles from Tallahassee — drive times vary.
