Should you go?
Homosassa is the sure thing. While wild manatee sightings elsewhere depend on weather and luck, this state park is also a rehabilitation center — resident manatees who can't be released live here permanently, so you will see them on any day of the year.
The park's Fish Bowl is a floating underwater observatory that puts you below the waterline in the spring itself, eye-level with manatees and thousands of fish. It's the best manatee viewing in Florida that doesn't require a wetsuit.
Visiting
Around $13 per adult (verify current rates), 9am to 5:30pm. No swimming — this is a wildlife park, not a swimming spring. Allow three hours: the manatee programs, the observatory, and the rescued Florida wildlife (panthers, bears, red wolves, and Lu the resident hippo) fill a morning easily.
When to go
Any day — the resident manatees remove the seasonal gamble. Winter adds wild manatees to the count.
Local tips
Check the daily program schedule on arrival and plan around the manatee feeding. The boat ride in from the visitor center is part of the experience — take it at least one way.
