Clearwater sits closer to Florida’s manatee springs than almost any other Gulf-coast beach town: Weeki Wachee is roughly an hour north, and Crystal River is just over an hour beyond. The best thing to know before you go is that Weeki Wachee’s daytime Wilderness River Cruise has been paused since December 2025 for low water, so confirm what is running before you build a day around it.
Lithia Springs, about 50 minutes east. A small county park near Valrico with a walled swimming basin on the Alafia River — the closest true swimming spring to Clearwater and a good afternoon trip.
Weeki Wachee, about an hour north. The classic mermaid-show spring, plus a waterpark and a beautiful paddling river.
Chassahowitzka, Homosassa and Three Sisters. Together these form the Nature Coast manatee cluster, about 75 to 80 minutes north. Homosassa guarantees a manatee sighting all year; Three Sisters offers the country’s only legal in-water tours with wild manatees; Chassahowitzka is the wilder, paddle-in option.
Further out. Warm Mineral Springs is a soak-not-swim option to the south, and Rainbow Springs near Dunnellon is the classic tubing destination about an hour and three-quarters north.
Timing. Go early for swimming, April through October, before storms. For manatees, the coldest mornings from mid-November to March are best.
Before you drive
Drive times are approximate and assume normal traffic on SR 60, the Veterans Expressway and US 19; allow extra on weekends and holidays. Homosassa’s shuttle boat has been unavailable since February 2026 for low water, and the park’s Wildside Café is closed until further notice, though the Fish Bowl observatory remains open. Rainbow Springs requires a day-use reservation for headsprings entry. Warm Mineral Springs lists a one-day closure on September 29, 2026. Check current conditions for all of these.
Start with these
Lithia Springs costs $2 per person and runs two lifeguarded swim blocks daily (9am–1pm and 2pm–6pm), each capped at 200 swimmers. The county has closed the swim area after heavy rain in the past, so check its status page the morning you go.
Weeki Wachee Springs is about $13 per adult and $8 per child, with the mermaid theater running continuous underwater shows since 1947. Kayak launch slots have been reported selling out about a week ahead, so book early.
Chassahowitzka Springs is free with launch fees applying and needs some navigation skill. Manatee cold-stress events bring extra patrols and no-wake enforcement, red tide advisories can affect the Gulf end of the river, and heavy rain can cloud Baird Creek for a few days.
Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is $13 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 6–12 and free under 6. Its manatees are permanent residents, so the underwater Fish Bowl guarantees a sighting on any day of the year — but there is no swimming here at all.
Three Sisters Springs has no public parking at the springs; a shuttle from Crystal River City Hall comes with boardwalk admission. Permitted manatee tours run roughly $45–99+ per person depending on length and operator, and the springs themselves are roped off from November 15 through March 31.
Warm Mineral Springs, about an hour and a half south, is a roughly 85°F mineral soak. Admission through September 30, 2026 is $20 for non-residents, $18 for Sarasota County residents and $15 for North Port residents, with kids 5 and under free.
Rainbow Springs is the classic tube-and-swim destination. Headsprings entry is $5 per vehicle ($4 for a single occupant) and tubing is a separate package, running April through September.

A one-day plan
For a manatee day, drive north to Homosassa in the morning for the Fish Bowl and 11am or 1pm programs, then continue to Crystal River for a boardwalk stop at Three Sisters. For a simpler swim day, Lithia Springs is under an hour and works well in the afternoon after a beach morning. Weeki Wachee is the best middle option, especially with kids.
If you have a weekend
Book a manatee tour out of Crystal River for Saturday morning, spend the afternoon at Weeki Wachee on the drive back, and use Sunday for either Rainbow Springs or a paddle at Chassahowitzka. Remember that Rainbow’s headsprings fee and tubing package are two separate prices.
Seasonal notes
Manatee numbers track the cold, not the calendar — a chilly front is exactly what you want. At Three Sisters, winter tours see manatees in the bay rather than inside the springs, which are closed off. Summer brings afternoon storms and crowds, and hurricane season can affect all of these on short notice.
