Springs Near Tampa

Tampa has no springs in the city, but it sits at the bottom of the Nature Coast — and an hour or so north the coastline turns into the best manatee country in the world. This is the springs region for wildlife rather than tubing.

The closest option. Lithia Springs, southeast of Tampa near Valrico, is the only genuine short hop — a small county park with a walled swimming basin on the Alafia River, about half an hour out. It is modest compared with the big state parks, and it closes its swim area at times, but on a hot afternoon it is thirty minutes rather than ninety.

North, into manatee country. Weeki Wachee Springs is roughly an hour north: mermaid show, waterpark, and one of the most beautiful paddling rivers in Florida, though kayak launches are limited and sell out. Push another thirty minutes and you reach Crystal River and Three Sisters Springs, the only place in the United States where you can legally swim with wild manatees on a permitted tour. Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park nearby guarantees a sighting year-round because its manatees are permanent residents — the reliable choice if a guaranteed encounter matters more than a wild one. Chassahowitzka is the wilder, paddle-in version of the same idea.

And inland. Rainbow Springs, about ninety minutes north near Dunnellon, is the classic swimming-and-tubing destination in this direction — just be clear that the headsprings entry fee and the tubing package are two separate prices, which catches people out constantly.

Timing. For manatees, go on the coldest mornings between mid-November and March; a miserable cold front is exactly the weather you want. For swimming, April through October, early in the day.

Distances are straight-line miles from Tampa — drive times vary.
