Springs Near Orlando

Orlando is the luckiest big city in Florida for springs. Three genuinely good ones sit inside an hour of downtown, and the Ocala National Forest cluster is a comfortable day trip beyond that — which means you can leave the theme parks after breakfast and be floating in 72°F water before lunch.

The close three. Wekiwa Springs State Park is the default: roughly half an hour northwest, a broad shallow swim basin, real facilities, canoe and kayak rental on the run. Kelly Park Rock Springs, a little further north near Apopka, is the one people fall in love with — a natural lazy river you drift down on a tube — and it is also the one most likely to turn you away, because it caps daily attendance and regularly hits that cap before mid-morning. Blue Spring State Park in Orange City is about forty-five minutes northeast and swaps roles by season: superb swimming and paddling in summer, and from roughly mid-November to March a manatee refuge where the run closes to swimmers and you watch several hundred animals from a boardwalk instead.

Worth the longer drive. An hour or so further out, De Leon Springs pairs a walled swimming basin with a pancake house where you cook your own at the table, and the Ocala National Forest springs — Alexander, Juniper, Silver Glen — trade facilities for a wilder, quieter setting under old forest.

The Orlando reality. Every close-in spring is competing with the same several million visitors you are. Summer weekends and school holidays are brutal: arrive at opening or go on a weekday, and have a second choice in mind before you set off. Autumn weekday mornings are the local secret — warm water, empty parking lots.

Distances are straight-line miles from Orlando — drive times vary.
