History & background

A sinkhole formed roughly 30,000 years ago by a collapsed cavern roof, this is Florida's only warm mineral spring and a genuinely significant archaeological site with Native American remnants recovered from its depths. It operated as a spa from 1946 to 2000, closed, then reopened for swimming only in 2014. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1977. The current three structures were designed by noted architect Jack West in the 1950s.
